There's no reason for it, it's just my policy.
| Along with a “short biographical summary of the last fifty years,” I
would like to take this opportunity to express what attending West High
meant to me, and to thank you for this. Hopefully you will not find
this too long or too boring. I sincerely regret that I will not be
attending the reunion. As I have been recently traveling in China,
Japan, and Alaska, it seems best to stay in one place for awhile. But,
I hope to visit Madison in the future.
In October, 1957, my parents and I moved to Madison from Tyler, Texas,
and I attended West High my junior and senior years. After West High, I
attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where I received a
B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Then, I spent two years in the Army as
a Lieutenant in the Corp of Engineers. After military service, I
attended and received an M.B.A. from Harvard University’s Graduate
School of Business Administration. During the next several years I
lived and worked in San Francisco, then New York City, and then
Montreal, Canada. All of these are places that I feel fortunate to have
lived and experienced. Working in Rockefeller Center and living in
Manhattan at 28 was exciting to put it mildly. And, the French food and
nightlife of Montreal was wonderful. After three years in Montreal, I
decided to make a change in career direction and to return to the US. I
moved to San Diego in 1975, where I have worked (and am still working)
in commercial real estate, first as a broker, and later after
graduating from an evening program at the University of San Diego Law
School, also as an attorney. Commercial real estate, like much of the
US economy, has recently experienced and continues to experience, its
share of problems and uncertainty.
Changing high schools in one’s junior year AND moving to Wisconsin from
Texas was a BIG change. But, I remain grateful for the opportunity to
live in Madison and to attend West High, for the good friends I made in
Madison, for the kindness and hospitality you extended to me as “Tex, a
new kid with a strange accent,” and for the memories you provided.
Unfortunately, I have lost contact with some of my best friends from
West High: John Nelson, who exemplified academic achievement but also
knew how to have a good time; and Fritz Holmquist, with whom I
frequently water-skied and socialized. Fortunately, I have been able to
maintain contact with a few of you, and thanks to Steve Rosenthal, to
have spent time with several of our classmates during a min-reunion
visit to San Diego.
On a sad note, I am deeply sorrowed by the loss of our classmates: Leo
Rideout was both friend, and lab and study partner in college; Jack
Mash was a college fraternity brother, who later moved to San Diego;
Mark Musolf was a good friend with whom I stayed in contact; Mort Allin
was a loyal and dear friend, a wonderful host, and truly the “glue”
that stayed in contact and maintained many friendships among us. I am
glad that a dozen of us were able to have a mini-reunion several years
ago with Mort Allin in Las Vegas while he was still living.
We had many good times in Madison, i.e. water skiing on Lake Mendota,
Friday night poker parties, pizza at the Italian Village, city league
baseball as (Ray) Huegel’s Unknowns, and Saturday golf organized by
Jack Haugsland, who was in many respects our primary social organizer,
and who I congratulate for his significant achievement at Greyhound,
and for his humility as to his success.
There is not enough space to adequately express the many good times and
friendship that I shared with Jay Smith during high school and college,
but I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to Jay and Pat
Smith, for their continuing friendship and for the wonderful
hospitality they have extended to me when I have visited Madison. In
addition to his business accomplishments, Jay has made major
contributions of time and talent to the University of Wisconsin, and to
the Madison community. Jay was a true friend at West High and in
college, and has remained so. I greatly appreciate his friendship, and
I greatly admire and respect his achievements.
We had a WONDERFUL group of classmates in Madison, who I will ALWAYS
remember. While there is only space to mention a few of you, ALL OF YOU
IN THE WEST HIGH CLASS OF 1959 MADE MY TIME IN MADISON SPECIAL.
Undoubtedly like most of you, I have had some lessons learned the hard
way. But, while I regret not having children, I remain grateful for the
blessings and the good fortunes I have had. And, I wish “y’all” the
very best and a great 50th Reunion.

Greetings
to all,
Over the past several months, I have spent some time reflecting and
reminiscing on the past 50 years! These thoughts began when I retreived my high school scrapbook from the basement, to
find that the pages had not stood the elements of age and dampness very well.
(I'll omit the part about how I've weathered the "sands of
time"). Browsing through the book brought back floods of happy memories,
from football and basketball games in Madison and beyond, many potluck
suppers (the dishes of which my mother made...naturally), dances in gyms and
back yards and walking...didn't we walk all over Nakoma?
I have no idea where we were going though. Other than attending class, what
wasn't fun? Some of my interests these days include photo journaling,
scrapbooking and genealogy. How did my WHS book get
overlooked? Needless to say the book is now in the process of
preservation...as for me...don't I wish!

After
graduation and U.W.Madison I taught at Meeting
House and Orchard Ridge Schools. I
then made a career change and became Executive Secretary to the CEO and V.P.
of Operations of an insurance company in Madison.
Bruce and I will have been married 30 years this year. We have 4 children
between us and 5 grandchildren. Dave Kissinger works with the tech center at
Ray-O-Vac. He has worked for them for 22 years.
Sara Kissinger Calhoun (Jarrett) is a Social Worker for Dane County in
the Family Group Conferencing Program. Sara and Jarrett have two children, Quintin (5) and Leah (3). Bruce's two daughters live in Minneapolis.
Ann Roberts (Bill) Cary
is an accountant for the University of Minnesota Center for Grants and Aids.
They have our newest grandchild, Evan (5 months). Lynn Roberts (Michal)Sedivy
teaches ESL for the Minneapolis School System. They have two children, Anna
(4) and Oliver (2).
Bruce retired from his CPA firm 10 years ago and is teaching accounting at Edgewood College. I
consider myself semi-retired as I do day care for Quintin
and Leah two days a week and they keep me busy! I feel truly blessed to have
two of our grandchildren in the Madison
area and the others close by.
In our spare time we travel to our cabin on 82 acres of land located in the driftless area of Wisconsin.
In the winter we love to cross-country ski, snowshoe and do some ice fishing
(although I am not so sure about this sport!). In the summer we golf, swim,
hike, fish and take advantage of the many great bike trails in the area. When
time permits we enjoy traveling and especially try to get to Sanibel Island in the winter. One of our
most memorable trips was to Europe.
We spent a lot of time in the Czech
Republic
where we met our future son-in-law while Lynn was teaching ESL in Prague.
Looking forward to seeing everybody in July.

After finishing at UW in philosophy and
psychology, I went on to grad school in psych at Iowa, where I met Judy, now my wife of 42
years (no analysis needed). We both did postdocs
back in Madison and then moved to California, where
we’ve lived ever since.
We’re both still psychotherapists in private practice in Berkeley, and I did a long (18 year)
stint at Cal,
teaching and counseling students. I’ve also developed a sideline gig as
a Macintosh IT consultant, which gives the left side of my brain plenty of
exercise.
We have two wonderful daughters, Jenny and Annaliese,
and our first grandchild is expected in November! No
plans to retire so far; work is much too satisfying to give up.
Addendum, 7/10/09:
What a bummer that I'll be unable to join you all at the reunion.
We've had tickets since February, but two weeks ago today, I checked
into the hospital for an emergency double laminectomy in my lumbar
spine. I'm now in rehab, and finally get to go home on Tuesday - alas,
way too late for the big event.
Please drop me a line at rbeery{at}berkeley{dot}edu or rbeery{at}mac{dot}com And have a great time. I'll be there in spirit.

I
have been married for 42 years to my wife, Joyce, and we have 2 daughters,
Tracy (age 38) and Nancy (age 34). We have 2 grandchildren by Tracy (Kaia, 4, and Zander, 2).
Following high school, I graduated from the UW Business School in 1963, and the UW Law School in 1966. I then served as a
Finance Officer in the Army for 2 years, after which I returned to Madison and joined my
father's law firm. I retired July 1, 2008, after 40 years with the firm. I
thoroughly enjoyed practicing law, particularly the clients and partners with
whom I worked for many years.
My passion is overseas travel, and Joyce and I also keep busy visiting our
family, spending time at our seasonal home in Arizona,
attending UW sporting events, and with volunteer activities in Madison. I enjoy
spending time, and keeping in touch, with old friends from WHS, and have been
deeply saddened by the loss of others, including Mort Allin,
Tom Doran & Mark Musolf. I have wonderful
memories of the time I spent with them, many of which date back to our days
at WHS.

Thanks to everyone on the committee for organizing
the 50th reunion. After graduation I attended Blackburn
College in Carlinville, Illinois
for two years before transferring to UW-Madison. I received my BA in English
in January, 1964 and my MA in Library Science in January, 1965. A couple of
months later I married Lee Sorensen and moved to the Detroit area where Lee
worked for Chrysler and I worked for the Detroit Public Library system until
our daughter Karen was born on Leap Year day in 1968. Eric arrived almost two
years later. I stayed home when the children were little, and took on lots of
volunteer responsibilities. That pattern continues today. I am active in
church and P.E.O. and occasionally join fellow Delta Zeta alums for
activities. Karen is now married with a seven year old daughter, and Eric has
a little boy a year old. Karen and her family moved to Cross Plains, Wisconsin
in 2003 and we followed a year later. It really has felt like we have come
home. We look forward to seeing classmates in July.

I worked for the State of Wisconsin
in the IT area. I started as a programmer and ended as a manager. I begain taking art classes in Florida and have been a painter for the
last 18 years. In Florida
we ran an art gallery for six years.
It has been great getting back to Madison

Hi
Classmates,
After HS, I graduated from the U of WI School of Nursing and have worked part
time ever since in hospital, clinic, and home nursing. I have loved my
profession.
I have been married to Ted for 45 years and we had three children. Christine
has a Masters Degree in Computer Science and is Internet Security certified.
She lives in San Francisco
with her husband Mark and they blessed us with our first grandchild 2 1/2
years ago, named Corey Ryan. We were thrilled after 66 years of waiting.
Michael is in sales with the Starwood Hotels and is currently an available
bachelor in San Francisco but will soon be
working in Hawaii.
Karen passed away at age 3 after being brain damaged during delivery. A real
trial for us.
Ted worked for IBM for 30 years and then opened his own custum
cabinetry business and has been busy ever since.
We have enjoyed many years of traveling and currently winter in CA, Az or FL.
We hope to come to the 50th reunion depending on Ted's recovery from hip
replacement surgery. Have FUN, class of 59.
Love Mary

three children and five grandchildren(4-22). They
are the core of our life! We lived and worked from Iowa

The
journey from West HS & UW to our current home in The Villages (60 mi NNW
of Orlando in Central FL) has
been made fun and worthwhile for nearly 43 years by my wife Mary
Frank. We met when I was in Air Force pilot training in Texas, and went on to 24 rewarding years
in the Air Force. At 20+ locations, flew some top fighters (including F-105
& F-4 in combat and F-15 “Eagles” in Europe)
and paid dues with staff jobs before retiring from active duty in ‘88.
4 yrs later moved to Marietta
GA to join Lockheed-Martin and
work as a Sr. System Engineer “trouble-shooter” & Flight Test
Integration Lead on the F-22 fighter development & modernization program
before retiring to our current location in 2008.
Education along the way includes 3 professional military war colleges and a
’73 Masters from USC and (finally) a '05 PhD from Virginia Tech
that took all of 15 years!
Having no trouble adjusting to retirement in this great, active, golf-cart
community where we play a lot of golf and travel to see the world and family,
mostly our sons. #1 son RJ is an Army Special Forces/Ranger/combat medic/PA
and Air Force Pararescue Jumper (PJ) with lots of
time in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (and other countries
we're not aware of.) While starting a new business training Armed Services
medics, he lives in Morgantown
WV with his pediatrician wife
and their 4 girls ranging in age from 2-10yrs. #2 son, Quinn, spent 9 years
in the Air Force as a KC-135 tanker pilot & instructor before

His "day job" is being a pilot for Southwest Airlines, living

perfect woman.
Really looking forward to spending some time with all of you at the reunion.
I add my thanks to the reunion committee for AGAIN arranging for all of us to
enjoy the memories and renew friendships from our days cheering for the Maize
& Blue.

How
good it is to hear about all our classmates. Sharon and I are looking forward
to this reunion.
Fifty years is a lot to sum up, especially since I never even thought
I’d graduate from West. It was Mr. Steiner who “graduated
me by decree” in the parking lot at the Chanticleer Club after the
graduation party and a couple of “out of the trunk” Hamm’s. Dick Durkop would remember.
I realize now that I missed out on a lot of the “high school
experience” as I worked evenings and weekends at a bowling ally on Gorham Street
during the school year and in the Dells at a camp for physically handicapped
kids during the summers. These jobs provided a lot of very rich experiences.
They just were more on the serious side; not genuine high school experiences.
I kind of bounced around for a few years before re-entering the counseling
field and I began working with emotionally disturbed boys in a treatment
center for several years before starting college. Back in Madison I worked
with grade school and teenager boys at a Neighborhood Center in the infamous
“Bush”; and, tended bar while getting a Masters of Science degree
in Social Work from UW-Madison.
Sharon and I were married during my last year of college (coming up on 42
years now) and we moved to Oak Creek where I
worked in Milwaukee
County’s Child
Protective Services program. We had our daughter, Kristine, who did a stint
in the military and is now finishing her PhD at Marquette
in Clinical Psychology; and, our son, Matthew who has an aviation degree from
Saint Louis University
and flies a Boeing 777 for Emirates Air in Dubai.
Sharon got her
Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics while I had started a
private psychotherapy practice. She turned down medical school to raise our
children and then later agreed to administer the “private
practice” which had become a large mental health center with eight
clinics in six cities and included about a hundred professionals and
administrative staff. In the “mid eighties” we added managed care
to our fee for service cliental and assumed the responsibility for the
inpatient and outpatient treatment for one hundred thousand insured
subscribers.
We sold to a national firm in 1994 and worked three more years for the buyer.
I retired after a second heart attack and several other surgeries. Sharon also retired, for two weeks I think, then volunteered at Waukesha Memorial
Hospital. In no time
she was working three days a week in their Cancer Registry program and did so
until early this year.
We moved in the “late seventies” from Milwaukee
to a house in a rural area north of Pewaukee Lake
and after several remodels and expansions we’re still here. In addition
to our kids we’ve always had one or two Old English Sheepdogs to heard us around.
We garden a lot (moved 23 yards of mulch this spring) and we travel a few
weeks a year, mainly to Kauai, Palm Springs
and Dubai.
Sharon chairs the committee that runs the “Starving Artists’ Art
Fair” at Mount Mary College each fall and she decorates, quilts and
makes a lot of beautiful things.
I do a little professional work and I’m still a big sports fan. I love
to golf, play competitive Handball and tournament Chess. We used to enjoy
playing bridge regularly but it is hard to find players now days. I used to
play serious Blackjack a long time ago but seldom play now and only for
recreation.
On reflection it might appear that these fifty years have passed ever so
smoothly. Not so. We, like everyone, have had our ample share of trials and
tribulations; times of discouragement and uncertainty, along with the good.
But I sure like reminiscing about West
High School. Mr.
Fallon’s drafting class and the sweet smell of tobacco; printing
“Have Gun Will Travel” cards in print class; Dick Durkop’s 1951 green Cadillac with positive traction
and automatic dimming headlights; Mo Bake dismantling the phone in Mr.
Schmidt’s English class; Mr. Jones trying, and trying to parallel park
on University Avenue; Howie Mazur flipping the
chalk and erasers above the light fixtures in accounting class; Friday night
poker at Mike Falconer’s with Dale “a little 9 and 29” Seborg, Leo “frost him with a king” Rideout , John Berge and Sid Sand; that leather football
helmet that had zero shock absorbs ion; getting a blocking lesson from Danny Lamphear; getting trampled by Larry Lulling; blocking
home plate on Lloyd Holzwarth’s brother Carl;
and of course, that last Hamm’s beer in the parking lot with Mr.
Steiner.

I
was married my senior year at Iowa State University
(Ames)and finished my B.S.degree in
Child Development. I graduated early and started a prekindergarten program
and then moved to New York City where I worked
for 8 years at the Child
Development Center
on 57th Street,
just down from Carnegie Hall. While my husband completed his doctorate in
Political Science at Columbia University, I completed my masters at City College
of NY and worked a second job as an educational therapist with a child in
Riverdale in the Bronx. We moved to Northridge CA
in 1970 where we both began teaching. David taught full time and I taught
part-time for one year and then entered a doctoral program at UCLA where I
earned an EdD in Early Childhood and Developmental
Studies. We had two boys together, Mark and Eric, who both became lawyers,
one in Madison and the other in Anchorage AK.
I divorced my husband in 1989 and remarried in 1995 to a man who was born and
raised on Washington Island. We met in 1994,
following the 1994 Earthquake in Northridge where I lost my townhouse and my
office at the University. Wayne Boshka and I were
married the following summer. I retired early from California State
University Northridge in 1996 after 25 years of teaching in the Educational
Psychology Department and Coordinating the Masters program in Early Childhood
Education. Upon coming to Washington Island
to live, I soon learned that my retirement was short lived. I am currently
the Administrator and President of the Board of Directors of the Washington
Island Preschool as well as having been involved as a therpaist
with an autistic child for 6 years.
My current interests focus on gardening, fabric art wall hangings and sewing
with silk material that has been hand dyed here on the Island.
I have 3 grandchildren and another due July 18th. The Island
has a wonderful fiber arts school, Sievers, that
draws students and instructors fom all over the
country. I'm currently embroidering a Norwegian bunad
for the annual Scandinavian Dance Fest held on the Island
the first full weekend of August. I have danced with my sister-in-law for
over 30 years now. Wayne and I have a 30 foot Bayliner
with which we like to Cruise Lake Michigan whenever we can get away for
awhile. We have found Jekyll Island
Georgia to be
an inviting escape in February and March. Summers of course we have lots of
family and friends that visit us on the Island.
Hopefully some of the Class of '59 will be our guests in the future.

and I were married in 1963. After UW in Madison,
we lived in New York City
for four years. I started my teaching career there. We resettled in Shorewood
and I taught secondary level reading and social studies in an inner city
school in Milwaukee
for 27 years. Kathy is still a practicing family therapist. We have a son
(married and living in Madison) and a daughter (married, two children, in St Paul). I have been
teaching American and African American history at Cardinal
Stritch University in Milwaukee
since 1997--Burt Hable and Don Hafeman
would be proud...maybe. As you may (or not) remember, I was 6 feet 4 in high
school and regularly intimidated Fritz K. Alas, aging has reduced me to 5
feet 4. I do rule the family cat. Looking forward to seeing many of you in Mad City
in July. Take care...and beat East!

When
I was just a kid I used to go to the Theater Guild children's shows in the
West High Aud. My love of theater started there. While on the stage crew in
senior high, I continued to learn stagecraft. At the same time I would work
with the Madison Theater Guild and at the Univ. of Wisc Union Theater and
the Play Circle. While at the UW I also worked some theater and in the US
Army in Fort Blister, Texas I avoided such demeaning chores as KP and
senseless guard duty by lighting shows at the Army community theater shared
by Army personnel and local El Paso civilians.
Upon moving to the Los Angeles area, I found the Burbank Little Theatre and
volunteered there and served on the Board of Directors. I met my future
wife on that stage. She was in the chorus of the Cole Porter
musical "Anything Goes" and I was the stage manager. Later
we helped some friends convert an eight lane bowling alley to a 220 seat
live theater. We were married on that stage on a set I designed
for "Barefoot in the Park": a Neil Simon comedy about
newlyweds. In my years at the Walt Disney Company, I joined the employee
group which put on plays in the studio theater. I acted in several and
directed one. Acting was a pure hobby with me as my wife was on her way to
becoming a professional actress. She is now a legit professional actress
with membership in three acting unions and I am now a company officer and
business manager. We are looking forward to our Madison visit in the
non-snow portion of the year.

early 60\'s. Wife, Donna, married 46 years. 4 children, 10
grandchildren, all living in southern Wisconsin. Graduated from the
University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1965, and have spent my career in
the food business. Wholesale, Retail, and Production. Currently
retired. Have a recreation property near Spring Green where we spend
time. Hobbies include gardening, raising bees, , fishing Canada and
elsewhere and travel (recently Russia, Kenya/Tanzania, India, Tahiti,
China, Tasmania plus most of Europe, South America and elsewhere. Also
play bridge a couple of days a week and try to stay healthy. My kids say I\'m on \"the hobby of the month\" program.

Hello
Classmates... I met my husband Bob at the University of Wisconsin. We
married in 1962 and moved to his hometown of Manitowoc, Wisconsin where he
worked as a Pharmacist, eventually owning a number of stores and health
agencies. We have three daughters and I was lucky enough to stay home and
enjoy my babies until they were in school - then I began working in the
Manitowoc Public School System and remained there for about 27 years, as
secretary, Registrar, Computer Technician, etc. Our children through
college and married, we decided to retire - and moved to Fort Myers,
Florida part time. I tried that for about a year, but realized that I
missed being a part of "real" life - and then went back to
school (again) and got my REALTOR license and all of the joys and hectic
moments that accompany that are now a part of life. Our children: Traci
Schmidt Powers along with husband Bill and daughter Grace (6) live in
Chicago; Deb Schmidt Noennig, husband Tom, children Tommy and Samantha live
in Mayville, Wisconsin (teachers and coaches); and Jennifer Schmidt Monroe,
husband Glenn and son Ryan (18 mos) live in Boca Raton, Florida. Bob and I
are in relatively good health and count our blessings every day! You might
enjoy visiting my website at www[at]judyhashomes[dot]com ... or email! Have
a great day!!

After
high school, I went to UW-Madison, graduating with a BSME-IE option. While
at Madison
he played varsity football under Pete Bruhn's father Milt, joined Delta Tau
Delta, lived in the dorms and participated on the UW Wrestling team until I
flunked out (but was immediately reinstated and completed my degree in four
years and three summer schools). During my tenure in Engineering School I
met Bonnie (A Tri-Delt) and we were married in July 1964. I worked for four
years as an industrial engineer in the paper converting industry in Appleton, WI, Then
returned to Madison in 1967 to the Graduate
School of Business where I earned his MBA and moved to Green Bay to became a Professor of
Business Administration. at St.
Norbert College.
Once again I returned to UW for a PhD in College and University
Administration and I have been teaching management courses and
administering at SNC since the fall of 1971.
We are the proud parents of three boys, (Eric, married to Amy
and living in Merton, WI; Jon, married to Lara and living in Homewood,
IL; and Chris, married to Francesca and living about a par five away
from us in Green Bay) and nine grand children (three for each family), five
girls and four boys. I am still teaching full time and Bonnie continues her
part time supervision of student teachers on the Education Faculty at SNC
and her many volunteer activities.
We continue to be active in recreation (tennis, racquetteball and golf as
well as bicycling), traveling to see the many wondrous sites of the world,
and visiting friends near and afar. The past two summers we have
participated in a Norbertine Heritage tour throughout Europe,
visiting a number of Norbertine Abbeys and soaking up the Norbertine
heritage firsthand. We are looking forward to seeing all my
classmates at the 50th this summer.

Hi classmates!
Our 50th reunion? Can’t be…
An “alum” of UW Madison, I married Lee Novak (Kenosha) in 1964
and divorced when my kids were teenagers. I have a married daughter Stacey
(Jason Faulkner) who is currently the Managing Editor for Creative Teaching
Press and living in Aliso Viejo, CA; and a son Dave who is the Creative
Designer for Anderson Audio Visual in LA.
I've lived in Madison, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Louisville, and three years
ago I brought my job with me and moved to Tucson, AZ. I live in the shadow
of the Santa Catalina Mountains with my Shih Tzu Bentley and 360 days of
sunshine—life is good! I’m an Advertising/Marketing Manager and
part-time Interior Designer with my own business. I’m also a Usui and
Karuna Reiki Master/Teacher and work with transplant and cancer patients.
The artist in me is still alive and well. I worked in stained glass for
many years and was commissioned to do the abstract windows for the
sanctuary (and a second commission for the library) at the United Church of
Christ in McFarland. I’ve worked in fiber, watercolor, and now am
working with abstract acrylics and collage—. I still love exploring
life.
I won’t be able to make it back for the reunion, but call if
you’re ever in Tucson—my. Madison cell is still good
(608-692-8033).

I
add my thanks to the reunion committee for all their work and to Eliot for
this great web site.
Washington, DC, has been my home for nearly 40 years. My husband, Alan
Johnson, and I have two children – Philip, 29, and Erica, 25. Philip
has just completed his PhD at UC - Berkeley in computational evolutionary
molecular biology, which means he uses computers to analyze DNA in
everything from the tiny critters in sewage sludge to Neanderthal bones. He
and his fiancé, Clair Null (econ PhD), are headed for jobs at Emory
University in Atlanta. Erica (a 4th generation UW Badger!) is IT
Coordinator for Citizen Action of New York in Albany, where her partner,
Scott Diehl, teaches computer science at Siena College.
As you can tell from our kids’ relative youth, I was a bit slow to
settle down and raise a family. First, I graduated from UW, moved to New
York, got an MS in journalism at Columbia, worked five years for Fortune
magazine, and, in 1969, joined the Wall Street Journal – after they
finally started hiring women reporters. In 1970 the Journal transferred me
to Washington, where I met Alan, an Iowa native; we married in 1975. With
Philip’s arrival in 1979, I became an at-home mom, keeping plenty
busy with volunteer work and such interests as sewing and cooking. We love
the outdoors – hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, canoeing,
sailing, swimming – the latter mainly at the little cabin in Lake
Mills, WI, that I inherited from my parents. Because Alan was a teacher
(high school math) and I never went back to a paying job, we’ve been
free to spend summers there, reinforcing our Midwestern roots.
Alan retired in 2006 so we could do more of the active travel we enjoy
before the knees and backs give out. Since then we’ve rafted down the
Grand Canyon (and hiked up!) and hiked or biked in Antarctica, the Swiss
Alps, China, Costa Rica, and France.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I asked Karen Mickelson out for a New Year's eve dance
date in the balcony of the WHS auditorium. We married
exactly five years later on New Year's Eve 1963, and here we are,
45 fun and interesting years later.
I graduated from UW Madison with a BS in Zoology, then went
to business school, wisely turning from Limnology (biology
of lakes), to Marketing. I joined Procter & Gamble in brand
management in 1965, stayed eleven years, and moved to the ad agency
business for five years. I joined Kimberly-Clark in 1982, where my
last position was Group President, Asia-Pacific, based in Bangkok,
Thailand, which was a hoot. I retired July, 2004
-- also a hoot -- and we built a house in the Phoenix area where we
spend eight months, the balance in Door County. We have a son and a
daughter, and three young grandchildren. See Karen's write-up for
more info, and a photo of us and our two terrific kids.
I am still an avid SCUBA diver. Living in
Asia gave me the opportunity to dive some truly awsome Indo-Pacific
reefs. Since retiring I have confined myself to the Caribbean,
"coming up for air" most recently off Honduras and
Saba.

After
graduating I attended the U of Wisconsin for 3+ years. I also joined Alpha

I worked for Wisconsin Physicians Service for 21 years and was offered and
accepted early retirement in 1995. While there I was a Medicare Fraud and
Abuse investigator and coordinator. The next 10 years before
I "really" retired, I had a variety of interesting jobs such
as working in Public Affairs for Forest Products Laboratory and in Customer
Service for Nicolet Biomedical- Viasys Healthcare. Now I'm retired and
living with my friend Bill Douglass in a log home a few miles from Spring
Green, WI. We have an regal Bengal cat named Kigor and enjoy sailing with
him on Bill's Flicka in Sturgeon Bay, WI and Door County in the summer.
This year in addition to this reunion, I’m celebrating a 25th reunion
with my daughter Sarah. I surrendered her after giving birth in 1964. We
had our reunion when she was in college and have been the best of friends
ever since. She is married and lives in St. Louis, MO near her adoptive
parents and siblings.

Nothing
like the last minute but here it is. I graduated from UW-Madison in January
1964 on the four and a half year plan because like our friend Eliot, I also
flunked out; way too much playing around! To avoid getting drafted like my
older brother, I joined the Navy and was commissioned in Newport, RI in
June. That turned out to be a good choice because it helped me to mature a
bit.
After the Navy, I moved to NYC in 1969 to work for the American Paper
Institute where I helped organize the first Earth Day. I was also assigned
to work on the first municipal newspaper recycling collection program in
the country which happened to be in Madison! I reprised that in a dozen
other cities over the next ten years and was active in all things
environmental.
In 1979, I became disallusioned with the paper industry and had the good
fortune to to discover and begin a new career in management development. It
began with eight years at a small firm specilaizing in executive
communication skills training where I developed the skills to strike out on
my own. I founded Direct Dialog Ltd in 1987. We have delivered a wide range
of interpersonal skills workshops for managers in the US, UK and Europe.
Retirement will come when I can no longer get anyone to hire me to do what
I love.
We still live in our 125 year old brownstone townhouse in the Park Slope
section of Brooklyn which we bought and renovated in 1972. In 1981, we
became frustrated with our 30'x30' backyard so we bought a 200 year old
farmhouse on four acres about 100 miles north of NYC in the Hudson River
Valley to do some serious gardening on weekends. I see that this coincides
nicely with many of our classmates who have second homes in farflung
places.
Diane and I were married in September 1970 after meeting at the UW Founders
Day dinner in Manhattan in April. She came to school in Madison from
Westchester County after I had graduated. After 30 years working for health
related non-profits, she is in her third year at a small biotech company
that is on the verge of marketing several new drugs that will have a
positive effect on several rare diseases.
Our son, Graham, was born in 1980 after several friends and relatives had
just about given up on us. He is thriving as a locations managers in the
film and TV business in NYC. Our daughter, Katie, was born in 1988 and is
finishing her degree in Equine Studies because she wants to spend her life
training and riding horses.
I have been active with UW Alumni Association in NYC and served six years
on the national Borad of Directors. Even though I'm 45 years away from
living in Madison, I will always be a Badger!
I'm looking forward seeing some people this weekend that I haven't seen
since high school.

My

married for 45+ years, most of it spent in Athens, Ohio, where we both
worked at Ohio University. My husband taught in the College of
Communication, while I was an administrator in a number of areas spending
my last 20 years in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. We have two
daughters, one who is working on a second career as a teacher and the other
a nuclear engineer in the Navy. We also have a wonderful son-in-law and two
fabulous grandchildren (aren't they all). After graduating from West High,
I attended Beloit College where I majored in government. I then went to Washington,
DC to work for Senator Gaylord Nelson from 1963 to 1967 when we moved to
Athens, Ohio. For the next 38 years I was very involved in many community
organizations including the League of Women Voters and served one term on
the Athens City Council. I even had a chance to write op-ed pieces for the
local newspaper fulfilling a long held fantasy of becoming a writer. Since
I retired in 2005, my husband and I have tried to become southerners and
suburbanites. We even have a red golf cart, not for the golf course but to
enjoy the many miles of wooded paths in Peachtree City. All in all, life

Something
wonderful happened at our 40th reunion. Jane Taplick walked into my life.
She had just retired after 31 years of teaching on Long Island. At 11:55 PM
on 12/31/99, I proposed. We married in Middleton on July 23, 2000. Her two
daughters and three grandchildren proudly preceded her down the aisle. My
twins stood by my side. A year later, we moved to Maine and built a house.
Jane has been the most enthusiastic fan accompanying our church choir (I
sing bass) on two tours to the British Isles and in June, 2009, to Ecuador.
When I am looking for her, I start in her many flower gardens and move on
to her sewing room. I can be sure our dog, Rooka, is with her.
Our boat was chosen with visitors in mind. We love to introduce them to the
rocky coast and safe harbors of this beautiful state. When my son, Ben, a
chef in California, and his fiancée, Ann, come, they take over our kitchen
and produce scrumptious meals. Ben’s twin, Rebecca, happy to escape
her responsibilities in the Berkeley real estate association office, loves
to join me in a friendly competition, cheering for the Cubs/Red Sox,
Bears/Patriots, or Bulls/Celtics.
Life is good.

Retired
three years ago as an RN. Husband Herb retired in Dec. Awarded for longest
and oldest (72) acting professor at Western Illinois University. Have three
adult children - Jennifer, an archeologist with the state, Dan just
received silver star, purple heart and combat awards after returning from
Afghanistan. Married after 13 years of widowhood. Is now an undercover
police in Des Moines. Paul a police officer who works only with juveniles.
5 grandchildren, one is an angel. He would have been 13. We have become
Winter Texans, it is GREAT! Just getting used to being old and active
- even though I am handicap. Haven't changed much other than hiding my
white hair with what's in the little brown bottle.

Spring fever all year
'round
|
The
last 50 years have been an adventure. We've survived 47 years of
marriage. Adjusting to living among the Germans while stationed with
the Air Force in Rhine Main, Germany. Living on the bare necessities
with Bill and David (our two sons) while Tom was battling the books and
desperately writing his dissertation. After the PhD. was accomplished
he left the teaching profession to become an economist for the State of
Kansas. Four years later he moved to Legislative Research and was one
happy guy when retirement came after 35 years. Barb
spent 25 years creating candles, selling wholesale and retail to many
shops. She also enjoyed her role as public relations specialist at
Frito-Lay before retiring after 15 years. We rebuilt our home after a
tornado wiped us out in 1988. Tom had a bout of cancer and open heart
surgery. Each challenge lead us to believe life is a gift, and
challenges make us stronger. We
are proud of our five grandchildren and enjoy getting together with
family, friends and volunteering with the Salvation Army, Scouts,
church choir, and preparing the house for the many gatherings we have
through out the year. Barb stays busy oil painting while Tom is
building bluebird houses. Life is fun, full of adventure and a blessing.

After
graduation I spent the next 7 years at UW: got Bachelor's degree and then
MD degree in '66. Married in '67 to Jean who was an RN from
Oshkosh during internship in Detroit, drafted as MD for Vietnam, then a
year in Texas, then came to Milwaukee County General Hospital for 3 years
residency in Internal Medicine and have practiced in Menomonee Falls for 37
years. We had 3 daughters all married and now 7 grandchildren. Although at
67 years one thinks of retirement I really love my practice and my patients
and may keep going a few more years.
Thinking back: West High really did prepare us for our varied careers and
educational activities we pursued. Regards to all, Charlie Holmburg

Smile and the world smiles with you. | It's been a good life, although not quite what I'd ever have expected.
I've worn, and still wear, a lot of hats. I've spent over 40 years as
a librarian, ending up as director of the UW-Rock County Library, and
am looking forward to returning there for a few months as interim this
fall.
Since 1992, I've been an ordained Episcopal deacon, and am now serving
at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Whitewater. I've also taught Church
History and Old Testament in the deacon training programs for the
Episcopal dioceses of Chicago and Milwaukee. Since retiring in 2005,
I've done a lot of coursework at UW-Whitewater to learn as much as I
can about Lake Koshkonong where we live. My church work has led me into
ministry to the elderly (and having both parents alive at 97 and almost
94 probably helps) and this past year I was Volunteer of the Year for
Rainbow Hospice in Jefferson County. I also love to knit, embroider and
do other things with my hands.
My husband Charlie and I just celebrated our 45th anniversary, and
marrying him was the best thing I ever did. He's now retired after a
career as an Episcopal priest and has been taken many, many music
courses at UW-Whitewater. (In case you don't know, the state of
Wisconsin allows you to audit courses for free once you reach 60. It's
wonderful.)
Our children are all long grown and flown - our daughter has just had
her first romance novel published by Avon. It's called A Talent for
Sin - just the thing for the daughter of two clergy parents - and will
have another coming out in August. Our older son is a Fed Ex executive
in Memphis, and our younger son is what he calls an "embedded systems
engineer" in suburban Chicago. After ten years of widowhood, he'll be
getting remarried in November. We have six grandchildren whom we dearly
love. Watch out or we might start talking about them.

Her eyes were made
for laughter | Hello
Classmates,
After high school I went to college at Oshkosh and University of
Miami and then taught first grade in Coral Gables, FL. Eventually
returned to Madison where I met my husband, Thomas Hiegel, a student at the
University of Wisconsin. Tom graduated in 1962. For a year we lived in
Miami, AZ, where Tom worked in a copper mine. Then we moved to Santa
Monica, CA, where Tom started a career in the aerospace/defense industry.
We have lived in Westminster, CA (about 30 miles south of Los Angles) since
1970. Our home is 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean and 15 minutes from Knotts
Berry Farm and 20 minutes from Disneyland.
We have three children and six grandchildren. Daughter Deanna and Rollie
have one son. Son Darren has two sets of twins (three boys and one girl).
Daughter Heather and Jim have one son and live in London, England. Deanna
and Darren live near us in Southern California.
For the past two years I spent most of my time living on Mercer Island, WA
(near Seattle) taking cared of my brother and mother. My mother's home had
a beautiful view overlooking Lake Washington.
I am retired from my business, Donna's Interiors. I did restoration work
for insurance companies and the County of Orange. Most of the work was
related to fires, water damages, homicides and vandalism. Tom retired from
Hughes Aircraft Company in 1992.
We are enjoying retirement and the beautiful Southern California climate. I
spend alot of time gardening and tending my small "farm"--I
have chickens, rabbits, turtles, tortises, and a vulturine guineafowl that
thinks it is one of us and follows us around the yard. I also do alot of bird
watching in the backyard.
Tom built a garden cottage in the backyard for my art projects. One of my
hobbies is rubber stamping--making greeting cards with themes such as
women, hats, flowers using jewels, feathers and ribbon or America Indians
using leather, feathers, and beads, etc.
In March I broke wrist and arm while skateboarding with five of my
grandchildren. After I fell, all I saw was my black socks with green
shamrocks....paint "stupid" on my forehead!!! |

two children (Beth, a teacher in Denver, and Frank, an administrator

Director of Financial Aid. Now retired, I volunteer regularly at the

moving back to Madison for law school and then, moving on to
Washington, DC. Don was in government work and worked for the US
Conference of Mayors for five years in DC. We then moved to Boston
where he worked for the city and state. He finished up working for the
school department doing Outward Bound adventures. He retired in 1998
and now has a career in coping with Parkinson's Disease. We have two
children (Cindy and John) who live nearby with their spouses. Cindy has
2 stepchildren (adults now) along with 3 year old Fiona. Fiona spends a

fall. Our lives have been interesting with many good times, friends,

I work full time for MetLife. After dabbling in work (teaching many
levels) while the children were young, I am now doing group pension
tasks. I'm not sure when I'll retire as I work from home many days.

moved in 2003 after marrying my second wife, Stephanie Citron. We are
both psychologists and expect to still be in practice a long while,
given that we have both been self-employed all our lives and haven't
been great about saving for retirement. Luckily, I still enjoy the work
a lot--especially with couples where I feel my age is a great advantage--if I haven't done it before,
myself, I've heard about it before, and can mostly laugh with people
about the absurdity, and inevitability, of all our relationship crises.
My life is hectic, but mostly in good ways. We have five children
between us, and three grandchildren. They are scattered from Brooklyn
to Berkeley, but all in nice places to visit. My greatest unrealized
ambitions: to be a Beatle; to be a good tennis player; and to influence
public policy by writing creative essays (I'm still working on the

Director of Marie Claire Magazine. This economy has shattered both
careers. They will
recover.
Daughter Kelsey, 37, is married to Dennis Kleiman,
40, has two daughters, Leila, 4, and Noa, 9 months.
Kelsey is a producer, director,
writer, and most recently mom of Noa, a 1+ pound, micro preemie
with issues resolving favorably. Dennis is an editorial
photographer for national magazines. Both kids live in NY, Kurt in Manhattan, Kelsey in
Brooklyn.
I worked in retailing, as a real estate
broker, and started college, again, the day
after Kelsey left for Boston University, receiving my BA in
Photojournalism, in 1991, at Columbia College, Chicago. A little late, but
it was a blast. Grandkids were also late in arriving. I'm loving
them beyond belief but wish it were easier to get up off the floor.
We have two Australian Silky Terriers.
No more multiple fish tanks.
We enjoy winters in Phoenix and summers
at our old, sand beach cabin near Sturgeon Bay, Door County. A
perfect contrast. We've lived in
Cincinnati, Ohio 11 years; Provo, Utah; Madison, Wisconsin; on
a 72 acre rec farm near Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin; urban Lincoln Park in
Chicago; Neenah, Wisconsin 12 years; Bangkok, Thailand 10 years; and now Arizona, 5
years. We've lived in 20 homes, rehabbed 9, designed and
built the last one. Seems we've liked contrast and change all along
except I have the same hairdo as high school.
Paul and I visited virtually everywhere in
Asia. I am forever spoiled by our ten years in Bangkok, where I traveled
rough and often with the gals, shopped endlessly, and all responsibilities were
handled by live-in help. We agree the most interesting Asian spots to
visit are Thailand, Nepal, Bali, and I recommend a safari in Kenya,
and love Morocco. After 5
years back in America, the adjustments of the 3R's, repatriation,
retirement, and relocation, are sorted
out. I keep my noggin charged by
improving at duplicate bridge, reading a lot, playing with
photography, creating books for my grandkids.
I haven't mellowed a bit and my
tongue still trips merrily on. |

Milan, Mary (Lerner) 3243 N Summit Av Milwaukee, WI 53211
mlml[at]att[dot]net A quiet, unassuming little bomb. | Still
living in Milwaukee
near UWM. If you live in the city, give me a call 961-0305. Bob and I have been married almost 47 years--the September right before my junior year and before his second year law school. We both graduated, and have lived in
Milwaukee ever since, except for 6 weeks in NYC when Bob interned for a
big law firm. He just retired after 45 years of criminal defense work. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home Mom for our 3 children with a couple of small part time jobs. When our youngest was in high school, I went to UW-Milw and worked on a Masters in Criminal Justice. That led to 15 years of working out-patient with people in the criminal justice system--drunk drivers, domestic violence, rape, murder, everything in-between. And none of them wanted treatment. The last 5 years I
transferred as head counselor to a halfway house for women: imagine
working with 12 women, ages 18 to 60 all of them acting like
pre-menstrual adolescents at the same time, and 1/2 the staff was
stealing. I can laugh about it now. Then a couple years as a TA for DD
2nd and 3rd graders and that's it for me. Now it's
gardening, reading, a 3 wheel recumbent bike, a lot of
barely started projects. No grands yet, not even in- laws, but
Ben lives only
25 miles away so we have regular contact. Right now it's me, Bob, and our 2 dogs (Ditka & Ganoush) aging gracefully together.

Nelson,
Aleta (Murray)
a-murray[at]sbcglobal[dot]net Hurrying is such a waste of energy. | Hi everyone,
I'm looking forward to two great events this summer; our class
reunion and seeing many of you in July plus the wedding of my nephew
Jesse Nelson in August.
Our reunion committee started on this project in the summer of
2007 and we've had a terrific time and alot of fun just being together,
planning the events and activities for the July weekend and sharing
West Class of '59 memories. We all hope you will join us for a busy
and fun-filled weekend in Mad City!
I've had a wonderful life so far, with a great family, multiple
career opportunities, jobs in broadcasting, cable television, state
government, medical administration, education, including several
retirements and extensive travel in Europe. I'm also a breast cancer
survivor...for 25 years.
My first job, post a BS in English/Speech from U-Madison, was at
WKOW-TV, the ABC affiliate in Madison. I hosted/produced a daily TV
talk/entertainment show "In Town Today" for 2 years. In 1970, Governor
Patrick J. Lucey appointed me Assistant Press Secretary during his
first term in office.
In 1978, I retired for the 1st time, traveled in Europe for 7
months, moved to California and was named the Administrator of the
California Ear Institute at Stanford in Palo Alto. I also had a chance
to work in a Silicone Valley high tech start-up as Ex. Assistant to the
President and CEO of ReSound, a digital hearing aid company.
I returned to Madison in 1993 to be closer to my family, my Dad,
(died in 2005) brother Jeff Nelson, sister-in-law Mary, nephews &
nieces, Jody & Nikki Nelson, Jesse Nelson & Bridgette Swan.
I was Special Assistant to the Secretary of the now state
Department of Workforce Development (DWD). During my tenure at DWD I
was director of the WI. Glass Ceiling Commission and worked for the
Governor's Work-Based Learning Board created by Governor Tommy
Thompson, as an Education Director for WI's School to Work program.
My 2nd, and perhaps last retirement was in 2007, from the WI
Technical College System's state office as Education Director for Tech
Prep. I administered a federal education grant that provides
opportunities for high school students to be better prepared for
transition to post secondary education.
This current retirement includes lots of 'dirt therapy' gardening,
travel, UW courses, painting and learning watercolor techniques,
theater, volunteer work, serving on several boards, time at our
family's cottage at Popple Lake north of Chippewa Falls, and other many
friend and family activities. I am so happy to be back in Mad City!
Thanks to you all for your photos and information on you and your
family that you've posted on our website all made possible by Eliot
Elfner, our own great webmaster! |

A few things never go out of style: a feminine woman is one of them. | I am getting married in April 2009 to a brilliant talented man I knew
in high school, but we never dated. I was married twice before, widowed
in 2004 after 30 years together. I have two sons who are both avid
sailors and a wonderful daughter in law. I also have and 15
grandchildren from a very happy second marriage.
My career has included: Modeling, running a modeling agency, working in
veterinary medicine; practicing in psychiatry as an occupational
therapist on an inpatient unit and in private practice specilaizing in
eating disorders; teaching at Milwaukee Area Technical College and at
the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA . I was the Director of
Accreditation for the American Occupational Therapy Association in
Bethesda, MD and the Director of Examination Development for
occupational therapists in Gaithersburg, MD. I moved to Scottsdale
Arizona in 2002 and became the Executive Director of the Council on
Chiropractic Education (accreditation) and later for the Midwifery
Education and Accreditation Council. By training I am an Occupational
Therapist and am currently working part time in home health.
I love to travel and have traveled the United States, Germany, Bavaria,
France, Ireland, Canada, Nova Scotia, Mexico, Equador and Peru. I took
a fabulous 21 day visit to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands.

Patterson,
Patty (Kell) P.O. Box 340 Stone Lake, WI 54876 patriciakell[at]yahoo[dot]com
If life seems boring,
you haven't met me. | My story is that after high school I attended UW-Stevens Point for one
year where I met my husband, Mike Kell. We will be married forty-five
years this summer and have two children, Lisa and David. They are both
married and have given us five "perfect" grandchildren.
Lisa taught special education before she became a mother and now is
busy with their two boys. Her husband, Brady Pierce, played football
for UW while earning his degree. He now works for Kell Container/Great
Northern Corporation in sales. They live in Hudson, WI. Our son, David,
and his wife Amy also live in Hudson along with their three children.
David is a dentist at Kell Family Dental, specializing in TMJ treatment
and restoration dentistry and Amy worked for AIA in Minneapolis before
choosing to stay at home with their three children.
My husband had a corrugated packaging company with his family in
Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. We lived and raised our family in Eau
Claire, WI. I stayed at home with our children and volunteered in the
community, church and at our children's schools. These were busy
years. Now that Mike is retired from Kell Container, Corp. we escape
the winter by going to Bonita Springs, Florida, and come back to enjoy
the summers on Lake Big Sissabagama near Stone Lake, WI.
I did play a lot of tennis but now Mike and I play a great deal of
golf. We enjoy boating, walking, biking, and anything else outdoors.
I've all but given up cooking. Over the years I have done a certain
amount of needlework and still knit. I love to read, garden, and am
hooked on Sudoku. Mike and I love to travel and have been on some
wonderful adventures over the years and have been fortunate with our
experiences. But the best travels have been with all of our children
and grandchildren.
I truly love being a grandmother. They are actually not "perfect" but
that's what makes them so entertaining! I wish the years could slow
down so we could enjoy each age a little longer.
Would love to hear from all my high school friends. Wish I could be two places at once, as I will miss seeing everyone.

He has that lean and hungry look | Celia and I have been married 41 years. She is originally from
Guadalajara, Mexico and has been the glue that has held our family
together. Unfortunately she is recovering from a broken hip and cannot
attend the reunion. We met at a bachelor officer dance in San Diego
when I was serving as a Navy officer. The Navy was a great experience
for me, not to mention that the GI bill paid for my graduate school at
UCLA. I retired from the Navy Reserve as a Captain.
Over the years we lived in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and finally,
Sacramento. Generally, I worked in real estate mortgages and
investments for institutions, like pension funds. I got downsized out
of a job in the early 90s and in 1997, with a partner and a secretary,
started a real estate appraisal firm, specializing in commercial
properties and right of way acquisitions. Today, in spite of the
economy, we have 40 employees, and so I feel good about that, though I
have sold my interest in the firm and work only part time. My current
best hobby is taking college classes at Sacramento State University.
Our three children (Karine, Brian and Laura) have brought us joy, as
they all went to good schools (Stanford, UCLA and UC Davis) and do
interesting things. Karine is a TV script writer in Hollywood, Brian is
a local attorney, and Laura concentrates on world travels when she
isn’t working at Whole Foods Market. Karine and her husband Bob, a
movie script writer, are expecting our first grandchild a few days
after (hopefully) the reunion.
I look forward to seeing you all. I still have photos up on my wall
from the 40th reunion. Several of them include Mort Allin who, sadly,
will not be with us, as is the case with a number of others. I have
written too much, but it seemed like a good time to reminisce. Stephen

charm (the third time that is). Peter is from Australia and we've been
together for thirteen years. He is twenty years younger and had not had
children so we decided to have one, later in life for me. We have a
young son, Jeremy, who is eight. He was carried by our next door
neighbor's daughter. I have two grown daughters, Andrea and Nicole who
each have their own families. So, I have five grandchildren who are all
adorable. I worked in the dentistry field for about forty years. I have
been leading personal development workshops for about fifteen years for
the Human Awareness Institute - www.hai.org

workshops. Peter and I work out regularly and I am healthy and happy.

recognize everybody. I've had a busy life -- graduated Milton College
in 1963, then married Al - we have celebrated our 45th! Al was career
Air Force (fighter pilot), so our life involved moving around a lot.
We moved to Utah in 1981. We have one son, A.J., who is married and has
two children - Jacob (6) and Madeline (8). They live in Mississippi at
present; wife Jessica will earn a PhD next May allowing them to move
on! Since living in Utah, I worked with the state court system for 22
years, retiring in 2006. Al worked for a regional airline and retired
in 2000.
We have been raising horses in the recent past; racing Quarter Horses.
We've been winding down on this and currently have only four horses.
(and yes, I still ride!) They are going to the kids and grandchildren
when they relocate; and/or when we relocate! When the housing market
improves, we will sell our ranch and move to warmer weather. We have
noticed that a forkful of horse poo weighs more every year!

Sometime I sit and Think,

last 50 years have been an adventure.
We
rebuilt our home after a tornado wiped us out in 1988. Tom had a bout
of cancer and open heart surgery. Each challenge lead us to believe
life is a gift, and challenges make us stronger.
We
are proud of our five grandchildren and enjoy getting together with
family, friends and volunteering with the Salvation Army, Scouts,
church choir, and preparing the house for the many gatherings we have
through out the year. Barb stays busy oil painting while Tom is
building bluebird houses. Life is fun, full of adventure and a blessing

They said it couldn't be done. | "I work retail." That's what I tell folks when they come

working at my family's store on E. Wilson St.--Dizon's. We sold
menswear, workwear and athletic wear. I did a stint in the U.S. Air
Force, stationed in Bangor, ME. Upon returning home, I received a
degree from Madison Business College, eventually assuming full
ownership of Dizon's in 1972. Trends in menswear led to "casual
everday," resulting in closing the doors of two stores in 1987. After
trying to reinvent myself, I returned to selling tailored menswear at
the Boston Store and, today, at JC Penney at West Towne Mall. I'm Dad
to a daughter, a stepdaughter and a stepson, and proud Poppy to a
granddaughter and grandson. I have to be one of the most passionate
Badger fans in town. During summer break from the Badgers, when I'm

grandkids. After High School, attended and graduated from
UW-Madison on June

took us to Mankato, MN, where our first child was born. In 1968, We
returned to Madison 1968, and we had our second and third children.
While in Madison, I worked for Meriter Hospital, tried to sell real
estate, and worked for Dane County. In 1983, I accepted a position at
UW-Whitewater in adminitrative computing. The kids married and have
presented us with five of the neatest granddaughters you can imagine.
They range in age from 5 to 13.

A walking Vogue and beautiful Mademoiselle | Something wonderful happened at our 40th reunion. Ed Harris walked into
my life. On New Year’s Eve, I said, “Yes!” and we tied the knot that
summer. The reception was at Blackhawk. His twins toasted our union
while my two daughters and three grandchildren danced.
Soon Ed retired from the adult higher education world. It was time to
create a new life together in Maine. One of the first things he did was
to get his SCUBA certification so we could dive together. We both have
found ways to give to our new community, Ed at the intergenerational
center and I at the community hospital and public gardens. When I am
looking for him, I start in his train room and move on to his vegetable
garden.
Our home was designed with overnight guests in mind. My older daughter,
Michelle, and her partner, Barbara, come to escape the pressures of
their world as environmental and corporate lawyers in Minnesota. My
younger daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Dan, recharge here so they
can face her grueling work with abused first nation women and his work
in the retail world in Montreal. Their three children come on their
own. James, 19, helps us build stone paths. Maggie, 17, comes for
sewing lessons, and Claire, 11, spends her time training our standard
poodle, Rooka.
Life is good. |

"I'm not as shy as they think." | Hello '59 Friends
I am so impressed with the commitee's efforts--thanks so much!
I am a double alumna of UW-Madison (Bachelor & Masters) and then
worked for 31 years in speech-language pathology and early
child-handidcapped education in Madison and Monroe WI. I retired in
1999 and now wonder how I ever fitted work in.
I was widowed in 1994 (Jerry MacLeod) but am now remarried to Rolland
(Rollie) Burhans and we live a little west of Monroe on 70 acres of
woods and cropland. In another life I raised sheep here but now am happy
to rent the cropland.
I have 2 daughters--Caitlin Wagstaff (Christopher) who lives in Naalehu
Hawaii with her husband and my grandaughter Elena-age 7. Cait teaches
in a middle school there. Nola Morrell also teaches (kdgn & 1st
grade classrooms but presently she is a literacy coach) in Milwaukee
where she lives with my grandson, Peter-age 6.
In this neat time called retirement I volunteer at a crisis pregnancy
center and run a cottage business selling used books on the internet.
The latter makes no money but sure is fun. Rollie and I are blessed to
have our fathers still living (at 93 & 94 respectively) and so we
spend time with them often. My dad still lives in his home in Mt. Horeb
and drives but with great caution! We also enjoy traveling and intend
to do more of that.
See you in July

A gentleman is just a patient wolf. I'm in no hurry. | Wow, 50 years, where to start?
After West I graduated from the U of Illinois with a degree in
Landscape Architecture (Thanks to the influence of Eliot's Father Joe
Elfner who was a Professor in the LA program at UW when we were growing
up as neighbors).
After graduation I worked for 3 different agencies of the Federal
Government (Bureau of Land Management, US Navy, National Park Service)
for a total of 29 years. I retired in from the NPS in 1997. While with
the NPS I had the great good fortune of working on hundreds of exciting
projects throughout the country, including several Special Projects for
the The White House. Perhaps the highlight for me was directing the
preparation of the Final Environmental documents and legislation that
created 10 new, and expanded 3 existing, units of the NPS in Alaska,
adding over 44 million acres of pristine lands to the system.
I also spent 3 years as Director of Park Planning/Landscape
Architecture for an interdisciplinary consulting firm, and retired
again in July 2008
While working for the Navy in Boston I met Nancy, who has had the
fortitude to stick with me for 39 years. We have 2 children of whom we
are extremely proud. Daughter Karla is completing her PHd in Public
Health (specialty is AIDS and Hepatitis programs) at USC, and will soon
assume a Research Faculty position with the University of California,
San Diego. Ironman Triathelete Son Joel is the Chief Financial Officer
for the Non-profit Watershed Stewardship Council in California, and is
concurrently finishing an MBA program at San Francisco State.
I also spent 3 years as Director of Park Planning/Landscape
Architecture for a private consulting firm, and 11 years as Sales
Manger for a major erosion control products manufacturer, retiring
(again) in July 2008.
Nancy and I enjoy traveling as much as possible (Spent a month in
Australia and New Zealand this past year), fly fishing, landscaping and
gardening.
I am still playing ice hockey (goalie), volunteer as a Mountain Host
and ski/snowshoe guide at Copper Mountain Ski Resort, and work the NHL
hockey, NFL football, Arena Football League and Indoor Lacrosse League
games here in Denver.
Life is full.
Hope all of yours is too.
Can't wait to see everyone soon, and swap stories.

Designed with a personality in mind. | Greetings to all, Went to UW without a clue as to what direction I
wanted to go. Life science, history, even criminology were interests
but ended up with teaching. I had a wonderful experience with 4/5th
graders for 30 years at Crestwood school in Madison. That age is
exted about learning everything.
Have been married for 27 years to Curt Caslavka ( retired from 34 years
in a ecology/evolution/ cell biology course program for premed students
at UW.) It took me three tries to find someone who loved the outdoors
as much as myself.
We are bigtime birders and this affects all our travel in some way. We
tend toward out of the way places with wild areas: Newfoundland,
Iceland, Churchill, Belize, Costa Rica, Bonaire as well as spots
throughout the US.We try to get to Montana every summer to hike. Our other recreation is kayaking in summer/fall and snowshoeing.
We volunteer with Audubon, prairie restoration projects and at the
local library. In spring, we concentrate on the gardens- fruit,
vegetables and flowers. Love to cook and read history and biographies.
Our three boys-Zeke, Ralph, and Bilbo (he loves bags) keep us entertained with their feline eccentricities.

She never votes "NO" on a good time. | Thanks to the reunion committee for all the planning. I'm looking forward to being in Madison in July.
I have lived in Huntsville, AL (Rocket City USA)for 26 years and have
been Executive Assistant to the President of the University of Alabama
in Huntsville for 21 years. UAHuntsville is a young, dynamic research
university with strong engineering and science programs. Amazingly, I
have worked for four of its five presidents and I'm not ready to
retire yet! I still enjoy the variety and challenge of my
responsibilities and I can't see myself giving that up just yet.
I have a BS from the University of Wisconsin and MA from UAHuntsville.
I am fortunate to have both my children in Huntsville. Son Bob Engberg
is a NASA Engineer and he and his wife Kat, an English professor, have
a 4 year old son. Daughter Sarah Engberg Threlkeld moved back to
Huntsville after a number of years in Indianapolis. Sarah, an ESL
teacher, and her husband Steve, a biology professor, will have their
first child in a few days.
When I have spare time, I enjoy my book club, investment club, and a
group of congenial neighbors. I am starting a second term as President
of the Huntsville Literary Association, a very active organization of
230 members who love literature, sponsor lectures and readings by
mostly southern writers, and promote writing, literature and the arts.
I very much appreciate my Wisconsin and Madison heritage and recall very fondly the days at West High.

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it. | Looking forward to seeing how we changed and how we are just the same.
I completed Medical school at the U of Wisconsin and then went to the U
of Oregon for an internship and psychiatric residency. I met my husband
on the psych unit(counselor, not a patient). He came with three
children and we had one more, so we have a pilot, teacher, lawyer and a
Unitarian minister, plus 4 grandchildren. After a career in community
mental health, student health, women's issues and private practice, I
am now enjoying retirement with travel and family.

No one ever pulls the wool over my eyes
| I
left Madison in 1969, after serving in the
Air Force, moving to Colorado.
There I owned a gun shop and shooting range for several years. Then I went
to being a full time cowboy, working on the ranches, and participating in
the local rodeos riding broncs. Then I moved to Phoenix designing feedlots and cattle feeding arenas
flying the company plane all over the US. Then I went later into
heating and air conditioning, until I retired. Evie
and I now own our own ranch in S. Az. We
enjoy Cowboy Action Shooting on the weekends, and all of the grandkids, and
great grands when we get back to Wi. See you all in July!!!

probably will never retire. My wife, Lee Love Youngman, owns and runs

over 35 major artists. I have two sons who both live in Southern
California, no grandchildren, just two great little dogs.
